I didn’t expect to spend 2024 learning the ins and outs of self-publishing. But life comes at you fast. Going indie is a lot of work. Is it worth it? That depends on how you define success. For me, success means this: I'm proud to call myself an author again.

We Are Not Alone: More City Owl Authors Speak Out
Our stories deserve to be told. Some courageous authors have spoken out publicly. Others asked me to share their story anonymously. I'm dedicating this blog post to spotlighting their statements.
Why I Got My Rights Back, Part 3: We Didn’t Start the Fire
Previously on my City Owl Press story: with books falling through the cracks, broken promises, and contract concerns, they’d lost my trust and I’d lost my faith. The dream of making a career as an author seemed more distant every day. But that was just the beginning.
Why I Got My Rights Back, Part 2: Burned Out
When I signed with City Owl Press, I had a dream of making a career for myself as a traditionally published author. After my botched second book release, I let that dream fade away. “City Owl Depressed” I had serious nerves before posting the first part of this story last week. Part of those nerves … Continue reading Why I Got My Rights Back, Part 2: Burned Out
Why (And How) I Got My Rights Back, Part 1: Slow Burn
Thank you so much for your support this week as I rereleased Cambion’s Law! I’m relieved the book I worked so hard on is out in the world again. You can buy it in paperback or ebook now, but if you're buying the paperback, just be sure you get the right one. Some of the … Continue reading Why (And How) I Got My Rights Back, Part 1: Slow Burn
Author News: The Cambion Series Will Return in 2024!
It's been a long, weird year so far. No, I'm not talking about the year (and some) since I last wrote in this blog, though 2023 was also...eventful. All three … Continue reading Author News: The Cambion Series Will Return in 2024!
All Downhill From Here: Story Structure in Act 2, Part 2
This blog is late. It's late because I made the silly mistake of promising in my last post in this series that the next part would come "next week" i.e. the second half of November. Well, that didn't happen, for a variety of reasons including getting behind on NaNoWriMo, exciting new health issues, and getting … Continue reading All Downhill From Here: Story Structure in Act 2, Part 2
Stuck in the Middle With You: Story Structure in Act II
There's no denying that storytelling can get messy in the middle. The middle of a novel may sag or slump, prone to descriptions like soggy, mushy, murky, or muddy. These damp and sticky terms reflect an experience familiar to many a writer. The often arduous process of drafting a story's second act may feel a … Continue reading Stuck in the Middle With You: Story Structure in Act II
Setting the Stage for Story: Structuring the First Act
All you need to write a story is a beginning, a middle, and an end. The three-act structure sounds simple enough. It’s a classic, literally, originating with the theories of Aristotle and still central to much of the structural writing advice that floats around today. But drilling down into exactly how each act should work—and … Continue reading Setting the Stage for Story: Structuring the First Act

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Welcome to the wild winter word marathon known as National Novel Writing Month.
