Author News: The Cambion Series Will Return in 2024!

It’s been a long, weird year so far. No, I’m not talking about the year (and some) since I last wrote in this blog, though 2023 was also…eventful. I may have girlbossed a bit too close to the sun, but that’s a story for another blog.

My friends, I’m talking about this year. All three weeks of it. The year 2024 has been wild, y’all.

It’s a long story, but here’s the short version.

I got my rights back.

As of January 12, all of the rights to my subversive little urban fantasy/paranormal noir series were reverted back to me by my publisher, City Owl Press. This included print, eBook, audio, and media/film rights for all three books.

I wish to note here that I did not initiate or propose the rights reversion. The rights were offered to me, unsolicited, on Thursday, January 4, minutes after I asked about exercising my contractual right to view financial records.

In the end, I did get to review those records, or some of them, at least. The information included made it undeniably clear that reversion was the best possible outcome for me and my books.

I’m not alone.

I was not the only author who got their rights handed back to them so fast it would make your head spin. Please show some support for the other ex-Owls cut loose during that hectic week: S.C. Greyson (Talented Fairy Tale Series), Jen Karner (Cinders of Yesterday), Gabrielle Ash, Lily Riley, Melissa Sercia, Jess K. Hardy, Alexis Menard, and Rebecca Fryar.

On Monday, January 8, as the situation at City Owl appeared to devolve further, I decided I couldn’t afford to take my time. Worried that the press would lawyer up and retract previously promised reversions, I accepted their offer. Four days later (my requested timeline) my books were mine again – and off the market.

It all happened so swiftly none of us truly had time to prepare or process. At the same time, there’s a sense of relief. Several very successful authors still with the press have asked for their rights back too, but so far the publisher has refused to revert them. We’re starting over, but we’re the lucky ones.

This year, I’m going full indie.

All this means that the Cambion series, including the third book released on November 28, 2023, have been unavailable for sale except for a few used paperbacks. If you own a paperback with one of the original covers by MiblArt, you are now in possession of a rare first edition.

However, I do not intend for this to be the end of the story for Lily Knight and Co. To that end, I have spent the last week scrambling to learn the ropes of indie publishing. I formatted my manuscript, bought Publisher’s Rocket, agonized over categories and keywords, and acquired brand new covers for a full rebrand of the series.

The covers cost me less than my former publisher wanted to charge me for the old art. Check out this stunning beauty from Artscandare Book Cover Design!

I have two more of these lovely art pieces burning a hole in my inbox. I can’t wait to share them, and my newly redesigned books, with you all. I’ve added a curated book soundtrack and legitimate content warnings, fixed some outstanding errors, and more to come.

As of January 21, 2024, this beautiful new author’s edition of Cambion’s Law is AVAILABLE as an Amazon eBook or free on Kindle Unlimited!

It’s remarkable how much regaining my rights to these stories has changed my perspective. It finally feels like it is worthwhile to invest my time and money on these books again. Now, I want to do right by them and give them the chance to succeed.

The paperback will be available soon and I plan to re-release the rest of the series quickly. You can add Cambion’s Law to your Want to Read list on Goodreads or StoryGraph and follow me here, on Instagram, or on Threads for more frequent updates!

Thanks for reading! You’ll hear more from me soon. In the meantime, your support for my work—and for my fellow freshly indie authors—means the world to me. 💜

    1. I don’t have visibility into the company’s financials, only my own expense and sales reports (the records clause was for records related to my books). But I may share more details from my experience in a later post.
