Well, that’s a wrap! The Writer in Motion 2020 blog project draws to a close this week, and though I’m now swamped with revisions for Pitch Wars (not to mention wedding planning) I have to say that I’m a bit sad that this communal adventure in story-telling and editing is over.
A month ago when I embarked on the project, I didn’t even have an author blog. I felt hesitant about putting any of my creative work out into the world, let alone a rough draft of something I had just spat out of my revision-addled brain. Kay Beckett’s thoughts about participating as an introvert resonated strongly with me this week. But a craving for community of other writers spurred me to throw caution to the wind and jump in anyway. I had been following Jeni Chappelle for a bit on Twitter and knew that she was a super kind and awesome human, which helped me find my courage.
And what a journey it’s been!
This project really took me out of my comfort zone at first. I couldn’t bring myself to post a true rough draft. Now I wish I had done less polishing prior to posting my first draft so I could see the full journey my story took. My fellow writers really impressed me with their vulnerability through their process.
I think my story changed the most from first to second draft, as I completely revamped the opening and found the emotional note I wanted to hit. However, my critique partners’ generous insight really made it shine and prodded me to clarify my ideas and prose. At times in the past, I have struggled with the emotions involved in receiving critiques on my writing, but this time I didn’t feel this way. My CPs gave their feedback in gentle terms and I can’t express how grateful I am for their kindness.
I came out of this five week journey with more confidence, more skill as a writer and critique partner, and a community of writers who are kind, talented, and welcoming. I would 100% recommend participating in the next round if you’re considering it at all. Personally, I’m already planning to do it again–and looking forward to it!
